A Field Magnetometer operates similarly to a metal detector. This method commonly allows us to detect buried metallic objects to a maximum depth of 9 feet below grade surface (bgs). Limitations to this method include, but are not limited to areas where metallic objects such as fences and/or vehicles are tightly arranged.
A magnetic locator is a great tool to use if you need to find metallic anomalies under the ground, under a body of water, or inside a layer of snow. This kind of utility locator will have adjustable sensitivity settings. So, you can find a small object up to 3 feet underground or a large object up to 17 feet underground (in optimal conditions).
Magnetic Locators, also known as Ferro Magnetic Locators, can locate items buried underground such as Mag nails and PK nails that land surveyors use, manhole lid covers since they are usually made of cast iron, rebar that’s used to mark property corners, marker magnets, and anything that a magnet will stick to. Magnetic Locators can save time by avoiding unnecessary digging while helping you find what you’re looking for and accurately.
Like any other locating method, its accuracy is based on site conditions and is subject to limitations.
